One of the often-neglected sides of the tech industry is understanding how to market yourself, and your product. While most people would like to think that simply being skilled and having good substance is enough, unfortunately, this is not the case.

The people with the most attention get the most opportunity in most cases, and if you want your business to be successful you need to find ways to get attention to your business. This is good for getting clients as well as good employees to come and work for you. In this article we’re going to go over some of the best ways to market yourself and your business:

Blogging and Youtube

When it comes to personal branding having a blog and a Youtube channel is a great way to establish yourself as an expert in the field. Even if you’re not very advanced in cybersecurity it doesn’t matter, you only need to be one step ahead of someone to help them. Also, beginners tend to be better at explaining things to other beginners than experienced people are.

If you are someone that is advanced in their career then you can take the opportunity to go deep into the subject matter and create technical walkthroughs or other content that will demonstrate your ability and make some money. A few examples specifically within the cybersecurity field are hackersploit, ippsec and zsecurity for Youtube channels. A popular example for cybersecurity blogs is things like Krebs on security, which is probably the biggest cybersecurity blog in the world.

Personally, I like to model my approach after someone from a different field known as John Sonmez, he founded a programming blog called simpleprogrammer that led to him being extremely successful in his career and he explained why it’s important across all industries in the video below:

Teaching Courses

Another way to establish yourself is to teach a course, whenever you teach people something it establishes you as knowledgeable in that area. With platforms like Cybrary, Udemy and Udacity it’s easier than ever for someone to make a course and post it online. If you’re more interested in creating security tools companies like Pluralsight allow you to create content centered around programming and you could make tutorials in popular security languages like Python.

Have A Specific Niche

You need to be sure that you have a unique niche that you are operating in. People never want to hire a generalist, they want to hire people that are as close to a fit for the job as possible. So, take time to identify the niche that you operate in and tailor all of your efforts to becoming an expert in that area. Some examples of good niches in cybersecurity include web app penetration tester, incident response specialist and cybersecurity lawyer.

Create Online Portfolios

The last tip is to create attractive online profiles for yourself or your business. Your website, your LinkedIn and your company page are the first impressions that people will have of you and your business. Invest in making those as attractive and professional as possible. Investing in professional web designers and professional photographers are important for making sure controlling your personal brand. As a business owner I would suggest hiring a professional organizer to ensure that the physical layout and design of your office space is attractive to potential employees and clients that you may bring to your place of business.
